A Guide to Water Leak detection in our Homes

  • Water leaks in your home – how to find them

Leaks in your home can cause damage if they are not attended to. They can lead to damp and the presence of mold. Wooden structures can also begin to rot if they are in the presence of water for long periods of time. The presence of damp or reduced water pressure are signs that there could be a leak somewhere. If you suspect that this may be the case, the source of the leak needs to be found as soon as possible.

If you think that water is leaking in your home, you can call professionals such as Plumbing Detectives to locate the leak and fix it. The alternative is to try and locate the leak yourself in the first instance or use Drain Clogs And Camera Pipeline Inspections: What, Why, And When? are the questions you must ask.

  • Obvious causes of leaks in the home

If the general location of a leak is obvious then the source is often easier to find. For instance, if you spot a water mark on the ceiling under the bathroom, the most likely location of the leak is the toilet or shower. Something as simple as repairing the sealant around the shower or dealing with a problem in the toilet tank could resolve the issue.

  • Finding a leak that is not obvious

There may be times when you think there is a leak but the source is not obvious. If this is the case you should check the pipes in your home, including those that are hidden from view. You may be able to spot water seeping from them. If not, you should feel the pipes to see if they are damp. If you do find a spot where a pipe is leaking, you may be able to fix it yourself. On many occasions, all that is needed is for the joint to be tightened or sealed. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, contact Milwaukee Plumbing Services (or someone local to your area.) Do not forget to turn the water off at the mains, or the relevant shut-off point, before you begin any repair work. It’s also a good idea to turn on the taps so that any residual water which is left in the pipe is expelled. If you do not do this, you could end up with a very messy and wet home.

There are some occasions when it’s best to call a plumber from firms similar to Make It Drain Plumbing & Rooter (for more info, check https://makeitdrainplumbing.com/) to deal with water leaks. The most notable of these occasions is when the problem is a burst rather than a leak. If this is the case, you should turn the water off at the mains and call an emergency plumber. You should also call a plumber if the damage causing a leak appears to be serious, or the area is hard to access. If pipe work needs to be replaced, a plumber knows exactly what to do and what type of piping to use. If the leak is in a tight space, you will find it difficult to deal with it yourself. Your local plumbers are used to this type of work.

Remember that the aim is to prevent damage from being caused and resolve the problem as soon as possible. If you are confident of locating the leak, and solving the problem yourself, that is fine. However, you should always leave more complex tasks to the professionals, or you may end up making the situation worse.

My New Groove Life

I still remember the day my husband proposed! I climbed the stairs to the top of the climbing tower at the camp we worked at in Michigan. With a big smile, my husband opened a tiny little box and inside was my grandmother’s diamond set in a ring of twisting silver and sparkle. The blushing bride that I was, I didn’t want to ever take it off. However, it was by far the most expensive thing we owned and my job involved sports, swimming, rock climbing, and all other crazy things you do at summer camp. The whole summer I battled between keeping my precious ring safe and showing everyone I was engaged.

I wish I would have had an alternative.

During our first year of marriage my husband finished up his senior year and football career. Almost the whole season I wore his wedding ring around my neck to keep it safe. With practices everyday and games every weekend, he had his ring off more than he had it on. I don’t know about you, but I wanted everyone on campus to know that buff linebacker was my man, but it just want’t practical.

I wish he would have had an alternative.

Two years later, my husband and I were working overseas. Most of our time was spent working in a private school, but when we did have a holiday we made use of our time. We traveled to different countries, hiked Asia’s national parks, cared for orphans, did construction, ran youth camps, and so much more. Almost every trip I left my ring at home fearing it would get lost, stolen, or broken. We weren’t exactly taking CHARTER FLIGHTS BETWEEN TOLUCA AND HOUSTON, or wherever we went (although we would have loved it!), so safety was a top priority. Besides that, the humidity in Asia got trapped under my ring and caused an infection. During our last year in China I kept my ring in the box.

I wish I would have had an alternative.

Recently my husband got super into Crossfit and no longer was the size of the linebacker I married. His wedding band didn’t fit. When we discussed replacing it we just couldn’t find a good solution. He didn’t want anything expensive because he took it off for workouts and rec sports. However, he wanted to wear something…and tattooing a ring wasn’t an option. His alternative was wearing an old silver thumb ring I had in high school. We often chuckled about it but knew if it got lost there would be no tears.

I could go on with a list of reasons why my husband and I have had to find a portable lint remover and a reason to take our rings off. But the bottom line was, we needed an alternative.

I needed a ring to wear when I feared for the life of my family heirloom.

My husband needed a new ring, and preferably one that he didn’t need to take on and off.

That’s when we heard about silicone rings!

Switching to Silicone Rings

Switching to silicone rings could be a life switch or a daily switch.

For me it is a daily switch. I wear my metal rings the majority of the time; running through life’s mundane schedule.

Basically I slip on my silicone ring for any occasion I use to take my rings off. I make the switch when I take the kids to the pool, workout, cook, paint, travel overseas, or engage in any messy or hands-on activities.

My favorite part about wearing a silicone ring is the ability to clean it quickly. My metal ring use to get caked with cooking ingredients and resulted in me using a toothpick to clean out each tiny pore.

I love that even if I forget about switching back to my metal ring, I am still wearing a wedding band that is stylish and meaningful.

For my husband it was a life switch. He needed a new ring that fit his lifestyle. He needed a ring he didn’t have to think about!

He can comfortably workout, do yard work, travel, and even swim with his new ring.

For both of us, silicone rings proved to be a wonderful alternative for our different needs.

Our silicone rings are:

  • Flexible: Silicone moves with our fingers and don’t risk injury with impact.
  • Comfortable: Silicone is light and squishy and has no friction between fingers.
  • Affordable: Silicone is cheap, no tears are shed over an irreplaceable heirloom.

BUT WAIT! Before you go buy the cheapest pack of silicone rings on Amazon, you must know

Not all silicone rings are created equal!

When we made the switch we wanted to do it right. After some research and a YouTube commercial we were hooked on Groove Life!

Meet Groove Life!

Alaskan guide and wilderness lodge owner, Peter Goodwin ran into a predicament a few years back. While he wanted to show his commitment and love for his wonderful family, he needed to stay safe with his demanding and active job. A metal wedding band wasn’t going to cut it.

That’s when Peter decided to design an alternative. He started with functionality by incorporating breathable grooves that would lock out moisture and enhance air flow.

Then in 2016, Peter launched Groove Life! He perfected silicone rings by making them not only safe for work and play, but also breathable and durable!

“I created Groove Life to represent what I value most in life. Functionality, quality, and a commitment to put people above profit.” Peter states on his website.

Why Groove Life

Peter is passionate about putting people above profit with Groove Life rings.

The biggest problem with silicone rings is they tend to hold in smells and moisture. So the awesome plan you had to workout, fish, cook, and sweat in your ring is ruined because in a few short months your ring reeks. Groove Life is different because it is designed with patented breathable grooves. The grooves keep fresh air circulating and bad odors from bring trapped. Meaning you keep your ring longer!

My husband can comfortably do yard work without metal digging into his skin.

Sweaty workouts and sports are handled with the air grooves allowing circulation, keeping our rings and hands fresh and damage free.

Groove Life stays on securely while swimming laps and probably dries quicker than your swimsuit.

My ring has stayed reek free even after enduring recipes with raw chicken, peanut butter, red sauce, and more.

Grove Life gives us confidence to play, swim, and live the lifestyle we choose worry free.

Warranty

One of the best parts of Groove life is their dedication to customers! They have a strict no BS warranty!

If your ring gets damaged, cut, stretched, or encounters some unique death Groove Life will replace it! I find that pretty impressive for a ring that is meant to endure active lifestyles and extreme sports.

Choosing your Ring

Besides the basic solid rings, Groove Life has 7 different collections that appeal to patriates all the way to care free bohemians.

I love the look of the Groove Aspire. The print is exceptional and vibrant! My Bohemian ring resembles beautiful stone and has a simple and classy appearance.

They also provide the ability to customize your ring. As a mother I love the idea of having a ring with my kid’s initials, birthday years, or even one ring per kid with their names engraved. The options are almost unlimited and such a wonderful gift idea.

My husband and I chose to personalize our rings with our wedding date. I loved that we had the option to choose our style, font, and color. For active couples I could definitely see GrooveLife’s wedding collection as the go to pick for their special day.

Groove Life sizing is made easy with a number of different tests and videos to get the right results. Groove Ring insists you measure your finger even if you know your ring size, due to silicone rings fitting differently than a metal ring.

My husband and I printed the paper test and completed all three tests to find our ring size. I measured almost consistently as an 7.5-8 while my husband seemed to be all over the place. Groove Ring suggests you go with the smaller size because silicone is meant to fit tighter. I let my nerves get the best of me and we ordered an 8 and a 10.

Groove life was right and I for sure should have ordered down for both of us. I don’t love things being snug so I am pretty satisfied with the fit, but now I have just the slightest worry my ring might fall off in a pool. My husband’s is wiggly and he will most likely get a new size.

Groove Life does states that if your ring doesn’t fit correctly after receiving it they will replace it for free within the first month of purchasing.

You also can exchange your Groove Ring for a new color within the first two weeks of purchase.

If you are undecided about color and size Groove Life offers a Try 5 option! Just simply pick five rings; color, size and style, that you want to test out. Try on your rings at home and choose your new favorite ring(s). Keep your wants and return the others for Free!

Overall, I would have to highly recommend Groove Life! I think they are one of the leading brands in silicone rings and have a passionate and reliable team backing them up. Groove Life is dedicated to bringing functionality and fashion to a universal consumer. These rings are not only perfect for the extreme lifestyle but also for the messy mama, dedicated nurse, workout jock, hands-on worker, and any other daily obstacle!

Mom Shopping List – What to Buy Before the Baby Arrives

As an expectant parent, you will be surely surprised how much stuff a human the size of a fat rabbit needs. The items, from clothes, pacifiers, diapers to blankets, toys, milk bottles can make even veteran parents feel overwhelmed. How quickly you can pass the hours in a baby shop! But do not worry! Stocking up before your new family member is not as hard as it seems. Although it might be tempting to delay it as much as possible (are there still people out there who hate shopping?), it is best to prepare yourself so you do not get caught empty-handed. This article will help you figure out what to buy for the baby. Here are the things you need to buy before the baby arrives.

Nursery

The first thing that many parents do after finding out the baby is due is preparing the nursery because as much as you enjoy spending time with the kid, everybody needs some alone time. Preparing the nursery is not an exact science, and it all comes down to how much time you are planning to spend. For moms who are breastfeeding, a glider chair with ottomans is ideal because they support long hours of sitting. As for the other items you need for the nursery:

  • A crib and a mattress and bedding for it.
  • A diaper changing table with straps to prevent the baby from falling over
  • A diaper pail
  • A mattress pad, preferably waterproof
  • Laundry bag
  • A toy bin

Outdoors Basics

As for preparing yourself for the time when you will take the baby outside, you will need two important things. First, a stroller with an umbrella. Secondly, they have an ergonomic, foldable design, which will make both your and your baby’s life much easier. You could also invest in a travel bed as it would work like a crib while travelling. You could check sites like https://www.safebabymonitor.com/ for the same.

Other items that you should include in your baby traveling gear are the following:

  • Diaper and wipes case
  • Baby carrier for indoor spaces where strollers are not ideal
  • Diaper bag

Another area where you will need to make several adjustments is the car. Mainly, you will have to buy a reliable car seat, at least a month before the due date for the baby. But do not just buy the first one that you see online – make sure it has been federally approved and that it respects all the safety standards regarding design and construction.

Furthermore, if you can’t figure out how to install the car seat properly, there are many businesses that provide this exact service. And improperly installed baby seat is a safety hazard, not to mention a slight annoyance – just imagine finally walking out of the hospital with your baby only to realize that the car seat is decentered.

Pack a Hospital Bag

Most expecting couples will be told to prepare a hospital bag once the pregnancy hits the 36th-week mark, because the baby could technically arrive at any time from that point forward. Many couples may pack some basic items such as pajamas, a few toiletry products, some extra clothing and nothing much else, which is a really bad idea for several reasons.

When you are in hospital, you will realize that the basic necessities that you have taken for granted for the majority of your life are exactly the things that you miss most because you did not think to pack them. We are talking about things like your favorite soap, a book, a phone charger (Yikes!), wet napkins (you will be sweating a lot), a crossword puzzle (you will get bored with your smartphone sooner rather than later), and generally stuff that will make your stay in the hospital more bearable.

Clothing Items

Once the baby gets out of the hospital, you will want to have several clothing items waiting for you at home because trust us, you will not feel like going on any supply runs during those first few days. These are the basics that a baby needs – although, let us be honest, you will not be able to resist buying more than what is required:

  • A baby swimsuit, assuming you gave birth during the summer
  • Out of the hospital clothes – you do not want to get out of the hospital with the baby wrapped in a towel.
  • A sun hat and a warm winter hat
  • Winter coat
  • Shoes

General Baby Care

Sadly, that soothing baby smell will not last for long – you will be surprised how messy babies can get. So, it is a good idea to buy some general baby care products that will last you for those few first days until you figure out what else you might need:

  • A baby monitor with good features
  • Baby formula
  • Baby shampoo and a body wash
  • A baby bathtub (assuming you do not like the idea of bathing the kid in an adult-sized tub)
  • Baby nail clippers
  • Hooded baby towels
  • Thermometer
  • Nasal aspirator
  • Infant-safe sunscreen

Feeding the Baby

Last but not least, before the baby arrives, you will have to decide whether you will breastfeed or bottle feed. Regardless of your choice in this matter, these items cater to both scenarios:

  • Bottles
  • Baby formula
  • Breast pads
  • Burp cloths and clothes (I think we do not need to explain this)
  • Bottle and pacifier sterilizer
  • Bottlebrush
  • Breast pump
  • Lanolin cream
  • A drying rack for bottles
  • Support pillow for breastfeeding

The list of items that a baby needs can intimidate even veteran parents, but as long as you put a little thought into it, nothing can really go wrong. Make sure to read through our list and you will learn how to get everything that you need for that special day.

6 Ways to Best Support Someone Undergoing Counseling

Let’s face it: life can get crazy and some of the twists and turns can be hard. Sometimes, it feels like there’s a force bigger than us pushing us down, with no way to get back up. Luckily, there are professionals out there who can help.
Getting counseling is not easy and it takes a great deal of courage to admit that you need it. Once you get there, having a friend or loved one close by is imperative. Whether getting counseling because of drugs, alcohol, depression or anything else, the right support is key.
If you know of someone who’s undergoing counseling, here are six key aspects to help them in their journey.
  1. Be kind. It was highly likely very hard for that person to admit they needed help. In recovery, they may become even more aware of their past actions and be ashamed. This feeling is enough to have them run back to their pacifier of choice. Being a kind friend and a non-judgmental shoulder to cry on will go a long way with this person. They’re a human being who just needs a little extra help.
  2. Remember that there’s likely a deeper problem. As friends, we want to help with that deeper issue, but sometimes we don’t know how. Encourage the person to seek professional counselling and get to the bottom of the problem to fix it from the inside out. There are many recovery centers that help people do this, such as the Soba College Recovery drug counseling in NJ.
 3.   Be there. Some people have the best intentions when they say, “Just call me if you need me.” The thing is, a person undergoing counselling may not actually want to call because they may feel like a burden if they do call. The best thing to do is to ask something like, “What can I do?” Or offer, “I can pick up your cat from the vet today.” Even if they say no, it’s a lot easier to say yes when an offer is presented, than to conjure the courage to call and ask for a favor.
4.  Don’t push. If they’ve confided in you that they’re undergoing counseling, this isn’t the time to be an inspector and ask for the details of their session. Don’t pry and don’t ask them about their session but be open when they do want to talk about it. Also, keep in mind they may never want to talk about it and you need to be OK with that.
5.  Be patient. This person may go through different iterations of counseling either with the same counselor or others. They may quit therapy, go back to their old habit, quit that, go back to therapy and declare they’re done for good until they use again. Remember that this isn’t about you and that all you can do is be there for them. Don’t take it personally and be patient.
6.  Take care of yourself. It may seem strange to include this especially after you just read that this is not about you. Yet it’s important to take care of yourself by seeking even counseling for your own mental stability when helping another. When we are someone’s support, we need to check in with a professional to make sure that we aren’t depleting our energy to the point of rejection of our own lives. Check in and ask yourself if listening to this person’s problem isn’t an avoidance of your own.
Counseling is a great way to talk out problems, be heard and work out the demons that ruminate in our minds. Remember to be there for that person and show them love. The only way they can elevate themselves is by deciding to do so. When they do, be a friend and offer support while they go through their process.

5 Benefits of an Ergonomic Sofa

5 Benefits of an Ergonomic Sofa

Between 2017 and 2021, the home furniture market is slated to grow by a respectable 6%. That may not seem like much, but year over year growth of that size for an industry as established as home furniture is big.

This rising demand means that more people are going into Furniture Shops near the Metro Centre to try and find the perfect sofa for their home and brands have to fight to stand out amongst their competitors. A lot of the time, this comes in the form of custom furniture. There’s a growing ask from consumers for more customized pieces that will not only look excellent in their homes but are extremely functional.

That consumer demand has given way to the growing popularity of the ergonomic sofa.

An ergonomic sofa can provide users with a variety of benefits over a standard couch. Below is a list of benefits commonly associated with ergonomic sofas intended to help buyers decide if purchasing one is right for them.

1) Improved Relaxation

While some furniture owners may have found comfort in non-ergonomic pieces in the past, the comfort an ergonomic sofa can bring to them is unmatched.

With an ergonomic couch, one can expect that every curve of their body will be fully supported in a way that finds the balance between firmness and leeway.

This increased comfort will allow users to come home to a living room fixture at the end of a busy day that will help melt stress and recharge batteries.

2) Reduced Risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders

When sitting on a couch or in a chair most people are probably not thinking about the effects the surface is having on their spine and back.

The truth is, most chairs don’t support the skeletal system properly which can put added pressure on spines and pelvis areas causing strain. This problem is only made worse when trying to lift one’s body out of a sofa that’s overly cushy.

With ergonomic sofas, users don’t have that problem. Ergonomic surfaces will support user’s backs in a way that promotes skeletal health. This will not only lead to more comfort at the moment but also prevent extreme discomfort later in life.

3) Increased Productivity

Sofas and productivity don’t go hand in hand for most. Some people though may be looking to get work done from the comfort of their sofa from time to time (or perhaps just between commercial breaks).

To that end, ergonomic sofas have users covered. The posture ergonomic seating promotes allows for users to stay more alert than with sofas that swallow people. That means people can get more work comfortably done from the comfort of their living rooms.

4) They Look Great

Just because something is functional doesn’t mean it needs to be devoid of form. With ergonomic sofas, people can shop a variety of styles spanning from no-nonsense minimalist pieces to more eccentric character-filled ones. People can look for options like an original leather sofa, which can be incredibly comfortable while also complimenting the interior of a place. Ergonomic leather sofas can improve the standards of a household and could be durable if taken proper care with leather care products that may further reduce the expenses of regular maintenance of the furniture regularly. You can find a complete line of leather care products on URAD.com. Additionally, you could also look for a few blogs on how to maintain such leather products.

The style of ergonomic couches that people go with, is only limited by their imagination!

5) Costs are Similar to Non-Ergonomic Pieces

It may seem like with all of the extra benefits ergonomic can provide, sofas that incorporate them would be costly.

Fortunately, prices for ergonomic seating is very similar to non-ergonomic seating. That means users can get all of the long-term benefits of high-quality ergonomic seating without needing to worry about exceeding their furniture budget.

Wrapping Up Ergonomic Sofa Benefits

Standard couches can cause undue strain on one’s back that can lead to health issues later in life. With an ergonomic sofa however, users can get all of the comfort they expect from an excellent couch while enjoying a variety of additional health and style benefits!

When shopping for ergonomic sofas, chairs, and other furniture, consider visiting European Leather Gallery, one of the top Stressless furniture dealers in the US.

The European Leather Gallery offers excellent quality sofas, chairs and more. All prices are competitive and pieces are targeted at people who value both style and comfort in their homes.

Pink Elephant – Organic Fashions for Everyday

When you think children’s fashion what comes to mind?

For me is quality, modern styles and wearable.

So often I will find a beautiful dress or fun top for my daughter, but the material is scratchy or not cut to fit her body. Our kids are children, and should dress as such, not a teen. However, our kids have exposure to high end fashions. Shows like Barbie’s Dream house, Fancy Nancy and loads of other Disney programs show our children young girls and teen’s wearing hip/top end brands.  I want my daughter to look like a 5 year old, not a 15 year old. However, I do want her to look hip and in style – this is where Pink Elephant Organics steps in.

Now that my 5 year old is starting Kindergarten she is very particular about what she wears. I cannot just give her an outfit to wear, she needs to be part of the buying and trying process. When I showed her the website for Pink Elephant Organics she mentally did a backflip with excitement. These are the styles she has been longing to wear, and I was thrilled to see they are affordable and made to fit a tiny frame.

Whenever my children put on new clothing I almost want to cringe – waiting to her the famous lines like “Its too itchy” “The arms dont feel good” “Its going up my back”….and the sad truth of low quality clothing goes on and on.  With Pink Elephant Organics, as my daughter tried on and wore each outfit she was smiling. She begs to wear these outfits now and has requested the brand now by name.

Happy 40th Anniversary to Precious Moments

When you hear someone mention Precious Moments, what comes to mind?

Is there a memory, a feeling, a particular item that you have pop into your mind?

Precious Moments was able to capture the innocents of childhood through their soft and beautiful distractions. They are the essences of what it means to celebrate our lives most precious moments.

Birthdays, weddings, baptisms, holidays    —   the big moments of our lives are made into delicate figures and illustrations we love to display in our home. Allowing us to recall, think and appreciate the times passed by.

Over the years Precious Moments has grown into the stable and thriving business. It all started back in the 70’s and is now celebrating their 40th anniversary! We can see that they are still a top collectible and loved by everyone who owns a figure, a book or artwork with the Precious Moment illustrations.

In the recent years they have expanded their collection to include housewares like wooden spoons, water pitchers, towels and room decor. Keeping up with modern trends, but staying true to their style and original design allows them to still dominate in the marketplace today.

MamatheFox’s first memories of Precious Moments are when I received a Precious Moments bible. I was learning about Christ’s love, the gift of salvation and when little MamatheFox saw those big doe eyed children, in their soft colored clothing I instantly fell in love with the Precious Moments brand.

I associated many childhood memories with the brand – I always preferred their coloring books over the other coloring books we owned. I loved to fill in the pages with colors that I desired to see on the adorable children. Children with birds, playing, reading, and doing things I liked to do. They were relatable.

My favorite season is Christmas, the celebration of Christ birth! This year I added 2 new Precious Moments pieces to my collection – the Deluxe Nativity Shadow Box and the Christmas Cheer For All ornament.

These two classic pieces will be cherished not only by me, but my family as a whole. We will have the nativy on display for the Fox kids to see and touch. They can talk about the story of Christ’s birth while touching and viewing the Nativity Shadow Box.

My deep love for birds is what attracted me to the new Christmas Cheer For All ornament. All the colorful and adorable birds sitting on a fluffy white snowman is the perfect gift for anyone who loves winter and the holiday season.

Ready for Real School – Kindergarten Resources

We can hardly believe it – The oldest ‘pup’ of the MamatheFox kids is going to Kindergarten!

The kid that inspired MamatheFox to create a website for parents is growing up, and she is THRILLED to start her next adven23ture.

Some of the kids who are featured on MamatheFox will attend public school, others are going to be home schooled Montessori style. Having said that, parents should find a nursery or kindergarten that can take the proper responsibility of caring for and teaching their children. In addition, choosing schools that are dedicated to making sure that each child is given the best opportunities might also be a wise choice. No matter how you choose to educate your children, we want to provide you with the best brands and products that we have found. We love sharing our thoughts with you – and allowing you to experience new things through our children’s natural play.

Typical things a child should know prior to entering kindergarten are:

  • Basic shapes. Some of the best nursery in stafford recommends that the child should have learned basic shapes like the square, circle, rectangle and triangle in preschool. If not, parents should teach them. In kindergarten, they will probably be introduced to the hexagon, star, heart and octagon. [You can also integrate different styles of simple flags like the Poland flag coloring page for printing and coloring that integrate different shapes and colors and learn a bit about flags!]
  • The letters of the child’s name. They should at least be able to recognize the letters of their name. In kindergarten, they will learn their uppercase letters and begin lowercase letters. They will also begin to learn how to write freehand without tracing.
  • Though it’s not necessary to learn to spell before kindergarten, children who show a strong desire to learn can begin to practice spelling basic words. A good way to do this is with free printable word searches. Practicing a word search hard or easy is a great way for anyone in the family to have fun while also stimulating the mind.
  • Numbers 1 to 10. Although some children will be able to count to 100 by the time they reach kindergarten, all should be able to at least be able to count to 10. Numbers will be used starting on the first day of kindergarten so the children need to at least understand and recognize numbers.
  • Social skills – The child should be able to follow directions, be able to be separated from the caregiver and use the restroom independently. Children who scream and cry when they are separated from caregivers disrupt the rest of the class. Teachers simply do not have the time to supervise individual students who cannot independently use the restroom. Many teachers now also use social learning as a way to engage pupils, which is going to be hard for your kids if they aren’t used to socialising. Learn More here to find out some of the ways teachers use social learning in the classroom. Once you know what to expect, you can help your kids to adjust.

STEM & Educational Toys

Q Wunder

The Q Wunder app (available on Android and Apple devices) is all about teaching kids emotional intelligence and mindfulness through starting conversations and play time with family through great games, books, toys and the show available through their app.

Social and emotional skills are often overlooked when preparing our children. We strive to teach them to sing their ABC’s. How to count numbers….but what about dealing with being interrupted? What manners are and how to use them? How to look someone in the eye and pay attention? Have your children started to grasp and master these critical social cues? If you agree with me and think these are necessary and important skills to have, check out Q Wunder and try out their free trial.

Catch and Learn Game

Catch and Learn by PlaSmart is an interactive and simple to play game. It comes with a variety of fish (small, medium and large) that are made of a dry-erase friendly material with a magnet safely secured inside. The parent or teacher can use a dry erase marker to create custom learning games based on what you are working on and what your child is interested in.

We love to work on matching capital/uppercase letters to the corresponding lower case letter. For this game I will write A, B, C and D on some of the fish and place them in a pile. Then I will write a, b, c and d on some of the other fish. I will put all the lowercase letters on the floor in front of my child. I will them have them pull a fish from my hand that contains the matching capital/uppercase corresponding letters. Then they have to use their fishing pole (which also contains a magnet) to select their choice. The pole has a button to push on which will case the string to pull up like a real fishing pole would. You can also do math equations, opposite words, colors and shapes and really any topic you are looking to work on. We love this game for its ease of play and variety of play.

New Sprouts – Grill It! by Learning Resources

Before a child can hold a pencil correctly they must master their hand eye coordination. More importantly their fine motor muscles need to develop. This is not something they your kids gain just by turning 5 or being a certain size, it’s a learning and developed skill. You can help aid your kids in their fine motor skills by engaging them in play which require the use of their fingers and thumb muscles.

We love to create restaurants and play shopping store games. With Grill It, the new toy from Learning Resources, you can help your kids play while they naturally engage their fine motor skills. No kid is going to want to do some mindless hand activity, they want to play! Help them play with colorful, naturally exciting toys like play food. It is a classic toy that is still loved and played with – so add Grill It to your play toys today.

Gnome on the Roam

Did you know that families are spending less and less quality time together. With activities, social media, TV and other distractions, we often forget to stop, pause and talk to each other.

Gnome on the Roam was created to help families get back to being together, and enjoying a few minutes as a collective unit who wants to do fun things. Each day you take your little Gnome with you as you visit the library, attend your soccer practice, or visit your grandmothers. Then you can log your daily adventures in the notebook with the adorable wooden pen included. By helping your child recall their daily activities you help them with memory recall and short term memory development. They can them draw and write out a few sentences about what they did that day. You use this as a daily journal for your family – this way when you look back at in months or years down the road, you can recall the fun and special moments you shared as a family.

There is also an app you can download for free. It gives you a daily objective such as taking a nature walk as a family. Visit something old (an old church or building, tree or an elderly neighbor)….easy to complete tasks that only take a few minutes but allow you to create new family memories on a daily basis.

Read Your Story – Personalized Books

Children love to see their own face and name in a book. Customized books are extremely popular right now and a huge hit with all kids. What makes Read Your Story different is that they include photos of the other family members in the book! In my child’s bedroom, you can see a family portrait (which I provided) on her wall! When she say that not only was this a custom book, but also included her family she was thrilled.

The story line is a classic tale of cleaning your room and the adventures of play through imagination. It sparks their creative thoughts and inspires a love for reading.

I Dig It! Dinos – T. Rex Excavation Kit

In a fast paced, give it to me now, instant gratification world our kids are loosing the ability to know what patience is. If this sounds like something you are dealing with then you have to try out an I Dig It! Kit from Thames and Kosmos. Their excavation kits are made to help kids lean not only about dinosaur bones, excavation, fossils and the tools involved, but also that some things take time. When my kids started this kit they were thrilled to see their dinosaur. When it didn’t instantly pop up they were frustrated and mad. They live in a blind-bag, instant on-demnd TV world. Having to wait and/or work for something is sadly not a daily activity.

I am so glad we are slowly working on our excavation kit. We work on it every day or two for a 30 min period. Slowly we are seeing the bones and the excitement is growing. There have been times my kids ask me to just do it for them…and I cannot lie, I have been tempted! But I know it will be that much sweeter when they finish it on their own. This kit is labeled for children ages 7+ (not for 5+), this is because some of the tools have a very sharp edged tool to aid in the digging. Be sure to explain how to use the tool and the safely needed to use it correctly. I would not let me kids to this unsupervised for this reason alone. It is also an outdoor activity too, as it gets messy when you dig that clay away.

Wild Republic Hugging T-Rex Bracelets

Boys and girls alike love dinosaurs. They are a classic yet exciting creature that sparks creativity and excitement. When I was a small child myself in the late 80’s we loved the snap bracelet craze. The snap type bracelets are very much back and much more safe then they were in my youth. Wild Republic picked up on this craze and made the coolest dinosaur hugging bracelets you can imagine. They are soft to the touch, even soft enough to sleep with.

My 5 year old who is going into kindergarten created some wonderful games with the dinosaurs. She took them outside and had them climb trees. By using the hugging bracelet feature she was able to have them hang from branches, scale tree trunks and forage through bushes. These Wild Republic braclets are sure to spark some creative thoughts and new games for your children too.

Magformers – Dino Tego Set

Magnetic toys are so helpful with developing fine and gross motor skills. They engage a child in a way that allows them to use science and their creativity at the same time. Magformers, a trusted brand and toy developer, released a fun line of magnetic toys with dinosaur parts, so you can use you magnetic blocks and create new and exciting dinosaurs. This 20 piece set comes with square, rectangles and dinosaur parts, allowing them to create and movable dinosaur.

My children love to make it do silly things like put the legs upside down or one up and one down – but their favorite thing to do is make the dinosaur eat a smaller toy! They open up the belly and place a toy or two in the hollow center of the dinosaurs stomach area. They they make the Dino stomp around as if it ate the contents – like its a Jonah and the Whale scenario. Sometimes they call it a Dino cage and use the inside like a prison cell for bad guys.

Magformers use quality products like Neodymium Rare-Earth Magnets for guaranteed connectivity as well as BPA Free HQABS Plastic.

Hot Dots Jr. – Pete the Cat Kindergarten

Pete the Cat is a huge character in children’s lives today. If you have not heard of him yet, you will be seeing a lot of him soon. You can find dozens of books featuring Pete the Cat and his daily adventures and struggles. Children flock to this blue, hip and cool cat. He is developmentally similar to a Kindergartner – which makes him very appealing to the preschool and Kindergarten market place.

Snowflake Stories

Have you started a reading challenge yet? Maybe one through your local library – we have a few summer reading programs we are working on – including reading 1000 books before Kindergarten! Reading to your child increases their natural curiosity of the world around them. Reading to your children helps them learn that reading is fun and you can not only learn but enjoy the books you read.

Children love to see their own name inside of books – what can make the customizing of a book better? Adding your own relatives! With Snowflake stories you can add in grandparents, aunts, uncles and other special adults in their lives.

What truly makes Snowflake stories special is the ability to make the story in English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese! Each story is written slightly different in each language, allowing all the books to have rhyme to it. These are perfect books for bi-lingual families.

You can add a picture of your child to the front page along with a personal dedication for them. You choose how your character looks from eye color, skin tone, hair color and hair style. You can also pick the names of the cast – we did a grandma, an uncle and an aunt. The bodies are pre-set for each person, that is not customize option – which caused slight confusion for my son as the people in the book looked very different from the person they know in real life.

I love how the book really helped show a child how time and dedication is what it takes, along with a positive attitude to succeed in a sport.

Pop the Pig by Goliath

Playing games as a family is a great way to engage conversation and make new memories. Goliath focuses on games what help children learn through play. The top hit game, Pop the Pig, is a favorite in the Fox house. We play all the time! Roll the dice and find out which color burger you choose from the pile in front of the players. Look under the burger, on its underside, and see what number is written (1 though 4). Place the burger in the Chef Pigs mouth and press down on his head the amount of times the burger told you to. As you go around and around taking turns the pigs belly gets bigger and bigger – eventually he is full and his belt pops opened! Whoever pops the pig wins! This game is very fun and great for basic math skills of counting, recognizing numbers and colors and the importance of taking turns.

I love how you can travel with this game as you can store all pieces, even the dice, in the pigs belly!

Mr Bucket by Pressman Toys

Mr Bucket is a fun and exciting game for small children. It helps engage them physically as they need to move around to play this game. By working on their hand/eye coordination and reaction skills , they chase after their colored balls. They scoop up the ball with their matching colored scooper and run up to the Mr Bucket – who is on the move! The Mr Bucket has a button on the bottom of it which tells the toy its on a flat surface and he begins to scoot around the room. When a kid drops in their colored ball, they must then run around the room and get all their matching balls in the bucket before he spits them back out!

I would suggest playing this game in an area that is open and have lots of space – we have had some balls roll under the entertainment center and the couch when first playing this game – Now we play in a very thin carpeted area to help keep the ball from rolling too far away. My kids think this game is hilarious and I love that it helps teach them basic skills like color recognition, balance, hand/eye coordination and gives them a game to play that moves their body.

Stomp Rocket Stunt Planes

Stomp Rockets are 100% kid powered and 100% fun!

This is the perfect toy to get your kids moving and to teach them basic STEM skills at the same time. The Stomp Rocket is a super easy to use product that needs little to no grown-up assistance. Simply choose your rocket (Looper, Wildcat and Glider are the 3 options in this kit), slide the rocket on the black tube and adjust the angle. Each plane has a different look and does a different trick. The Looper makes loops, Wildcat does flips, turns and soars. Glider does tricks and glides over 100 feet!

My kids love running to jump on the launch pad, but running is not required, they only love the energy involved in the action of it. Adjust the angle of the base to have the rocket shoot up, at the 45 degree angle or a 90 degree angle. Test the rockets at different angles and see what they do differently. Kids love learning about trajectory by changing the angle themselves. Try a soft stomp and a hard stomp – note the differences. Explore aerodynamics and the create a love for science with the Stomp Rocket.

Fish ‘N Spell

Bath time is always a blast! We love to play in the water while we get cleaned up. By playing with Fish ‘N Spell my kids get a grasp for letters, colors and work on their hand-eye coordination. This set is amazing for several reasons – first off, it comes with tons of letters, so you can actually spell things! So many times kits come with only 1 of each letter – not letting you spell actual words. Luckily Fish ‘N Spell is made by Edushape, a brand that really knows kids. They knew that kids want to spell basic words like their names, the words “mom, dad, ball” and others that require at least 2 of the same letter. By giving us extras they allow us to really use this toy and learn with it.

The fishing poles need to be assembled by the parent, but it’s very simple and comes with instructions. With 4 poles, 2 of each size, there are plenty for siblings to share and in case one gets misplaced. This fishing pole concept game works with water. When the foam pieces get wet from the water they are then able to stick together, allowing the pole to effectively pick up the letter. It has to be wet to work.

If you are looking for a fun toy to use in your water table outside this fall, then the Fish ‘N Spell is going to be your best bet.

Highlights – Let’s Write Words (Write-On Wipe-Off Book)

Keeping up with penmanship is key for small children. My daughter loves to write and practice her letters. If you are wanting to support your children’s ability to write, and help them gain more confidence and practice in handwriting, then this is going to be the perfect tool for your home. The Highlights team, which knows children so very well, has developed this beautiful, colorful and engaging dry erase style book. It even comes with a dry erase marking to use with the book!

There are basic words which your children will want to write, like body parts, shapes and colors as well as fun things hidden picture games and sentence building. One each page there is a section that is a traceable word, then a blank space next to it allowing the child to try to write the word fully on their own. Having them practice the tracing first allows them to practice the movement and gain confidence in their motor skills. Once they are proficient at tracing we then try to write it in the blank space on our own. And of course, since this book is a write-on, wipe-off style book, it can be used over and over again.

Perfect for at home use, for long car trips and at restaurants.

GoSili Reusable Snack Bags

I hate using plastic storage bags for snacks and foods in packed lunches. Did you know that you cannot toss them in the regular recycling bin? Only certain recycling plants have the ability to work with zip style storage bags – then just toss them in the trash! You can recycle them at certain plastic bag collection bins. In the meanwhile, you can help slow down the filling of landfills by switching to GoSili Reusable Snack Bags.

I love these bags because they are simple to use and easy to clean.

They store flat, making it slide up again my cupboard wall very easily. They are

Dishwasher safe – for those busy nights when hand washing is not going to happen.

The coolest part is they are microwave safe! Love to have a warm tuna sandwich – now you can heat it in your bag! No more waste created in your meal prep.

Zip and Zoe Backpack and Zipped Lunchies with Ice Packs (for Barnes & Noble)

Backpacks take a beating. Lunch sacks get messy and worn out. Each year we seem to require a new backpack and new lunch sack due to the wear and tear they endure. This year we are playing it safe with the new set of backpacks and zipped lunchies from Babymel’s newest line, Zip & Zoe!

The designs for Zip and Zoe are monochrome (black and white) with them featured on brightly colored backgrounds. These stylish and functional kids sizes backpacks are going to set your child’s imagination on some magical adventures with prints that feature dinosaurs and unicorns.

Each lunch bag comes with a matching, perfectly sized ice pack. I always put an ice pack in my kids lunches, and having a box that comes with a matching, perfectly fitting ice pack makes packing lunches a dream for parents. I love the extra internal pocket to stash their extra clothes out of the way, so that their daily artwork doesn’t rub against it. Its insides are easy to wipes out and keep clean.

These backpacks are now available at your local Barnes and Noble retailer.

Boardwalk T-Shirts

Funny tee’s are always a hit. With witty puns, silly images and play on words, they are always a crowd pleaser.

Boardwalk makes high quality, unisex tee’s for boys and girls alike. You can shop by boy, girl or uni-sex options. I love how they have it set up so scroll through all the pages of options. We love the ones that feature Ohio, of course, but there are tons of shirts with other states on them with funny thoughts and themes about that state. Like HOT over the state of Atlanta (Hot-lanta) is one of my favorites. We also think the picture of a chicken with an arrow pointing to the chickens butt that say “Guess What” is hilarious! The shirts are uni-sex cut, which means for little girls they will be a bit boxy in shape, so keep that in mind when ordering your size.

Once you order from Boardwalk and the laughs and compliments come rolling in, you will be back on their site, grabbing a few more to add into the mix.

Don’t Go Nuts Snacks and Spreads

With allergies being such an important topic in schools it’s imperative to pay attention and ask if there are any nut allergies in your child’s classroom. Don’t assume that the kids in class will be safe if you pack a peanut or nut based food for your child – sometimes kids are airborne allergic, so being in the same room as a nut may cause a horrible, if not life threatening, reaction. My son will ONLY eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches – nothing else. If my son ends up in a class with a kid with a server allergy I was wondering how I would handle this situation – and now I know what to do – we can use Don’t Go Nuts products instead.

Don’t Go Nuts are so safe that you can rest assured that your products will be completely nut free. They even vacuum off the packages they receive before bringing them into the nut-free kitchen where their products are made. That is real diligence! They offer a large product line of spreads and snacks – like chocolate chip granola bars, blueberry granola bars, and 5 spreads which include: Chocolate, Slightly Sweet, Sea Salt, Pure Unsalted and Simply Cinnamon spreads. All the spreads are made with Soybeans, which makes them fully nut-free and school safe.

USDA Organic, Certified Gluten-Free, and Vegan – you are going to be amazed with the flavors and texture of Don’t Go Nut products.

5 Features to Look for When Buying a Baby Monitor

Credit: https://i.imgur.com/kjTFTbe.png
Becoming a parent may be one of the most gratifying and terrifying experiences in the whole world. Elizabeth Stone captured it best when she said that having a child was “to decide forever to have your heart go walking outside your body.” If we could, we would be there for every single moment of our child’s life. Yet, we cannot spend every second of our day watching our child sleep!
Many new parents use baby monitors to keep an eye on their child when they are away. Although the purpose of a baby monitor seems pretty self-explanatory, there are actually many factors you need to consider before buying one. Here are five features to look for when buying a baby monitor.
1. Methods of Monitoring
You should look whether a monitor relies on audio, video, or another form of observation. Do you want to listen to your baby, or would you prefer to have a visual as well? There are many products outfitted with video recording technology. These will live stream your child’s every movement and project this footage on your screen. If you opt for a newer model, you can even connect your monitor to your own smart devices. This way, you can check in on your child at your own convenience!
Some parents prefer monitors that go the extra step and catalog their child’s vital signs. These advanced models will record your baby’s temperature and alert you if it enters into unhealthy territory.
2. Frequency
In order to make sure your monitor works correctly, you need to purchase one with a frequency unlike the other devices in your home. Prior to the digital renaissance, parents didn’t need to put much thought into their device’s frequency. They didn’t have to worry about wifi, cable signals, and cordless phones interfering with their monitoring product.
Now, the times have truly changed, and you need to invest in a baby monitor that is a different frequency than your other wireless devices. Many manufacturers have started using the 1.9 GHz frequency band. This particular band is least prone to interference or cross-talk. Yet, you should always check the frequency band on your own devices prior to buying a monitor.
3. Battery Life
When purchasing a device to watch your child, you need to take into account its battery life. If you buy something that drains the life out of them within minutes, you’re going to buy a lot of AA battery packs. Some models feature rechargeable batteries, but even then, there is a possibility that you are still going to experience mass battery death.
As always, do your research. You can seek out products with a higher battery life through website reviews. For example, the website from Best Baby Station will include battery vitality in their product overviews.
4. Low Battery Alert
You’ll need to look for a baby monitor that has a built-in alert system for a low battery. When you have a baby who requires your constant attention, it’s easy to let other things fall by the wayside. So, look for a monitor that will alert you when it needs recharging. This way, the device will keep you informed of its needs, instead of you constantly guessing or forgetting them.
5. Night Vision Capabilities
If you opt for a video monitor, then you’ll need it to be equipped with night vision. The whole investment becomes moot if you cannot see your baby at night. It’s not as if you’re going to leave camera lighting in your baby’s room every evening. Thus, ensure that your camera is equipped with infrared night vision. This way, you can see your child clearly, night and day!
In Conclusion
When it comes to your baby monitor, the most important tip is to look for features that fit your parenting style. Take into account you and your baby’s needs, and do your research! Equipped with this combined knowledge, you can easily find your personal, perfect baby monitor.
