Splay

In all of my recent shoe research, I came across Splay Athletics. These minimalist, barefoot shoes are just perfect for kids feet. Their affordable price is like music to a parents ears and the fit allows kiddos to move, run, jump, and skip freely.

Splay shoes are a great addition to our shoe collection. The affordable price of these are attractive and many of the colors are neutral so the shoes can be worn and worn again, even with different genders.

My kids feet are not hindered in any way when wearing these shoes, which is so important for little, growing feet. They are super flat and have no arch. This feature allows feet to build strong muscles in order to walk properly.

I love these shoes for our kids because of the flexibility of them. They move so easily and mimic the foot shape and movement of my kids. Whatever foot movement my kids do, the shoe moves right along with them. I just love this design because I really believe this is how shoes are supposed to be.

Splay Athletic shoes are super lightweight. That is the first feature that stood out to me; I really couldn’t believe it. This is great because they aren’t ‘clunky’. So often I feel that kids shoes are big and bulky and the weight of many of them just seem overpowering on a little foot. These shoes are quite the opposite of that.

The Splay shoes are completely machine washable, so if your kids are like mine and get dirty often, this is music to your ears. I haven’t had the need to wash the shoes yet, but I have seen before and after photos of other kids Splay shoes and it’s pretty incredible how clean they get. This is for sure a perk of these shoes.

There is just one thick, Velcro strap on the top of the shoe that allows for easy off and on access. My three year old who has trouble with many other shoes can put these on with no problems!

On the toe and heel of the shoe there is a microfiber strip. This really creates a barrier and offers lots of protection. These parts of a children’s shoe are often the first to go, so the reinforced strip is great.

I have noticed that these shoes are great for kids with low volume feet and not so great for kids with high volume feet. My three year old has very high volume feet.

This means that from the top of his foot to the bottom of his foot it’s tall. In comparison, someone who has a low volume foot will have a short measurement from the top of the foot to the bottom of the foot. High volume feet would need shoe laces to be loosened much more than low volume feet, whose shoe laces would need tightened so the foot is secure.

Because of the high volume of his feet, these shoes do not fit his foot super well. They really bend upwards because of his foot shape. This causes an issue because the Velcro strap doesn’t close and secure very much. If I help him get a good closure, they work, but if he does it on his own the shoes often times fall off.

Something to keep in mind.

A downside that we are experiencing with these Splay shoes is the fraying of the tongue of the shoe. I have noticed that on either side of the tongue there is quite a bit of fraying occurring. This is happening on the outside of the stitching, so I hoping that the fraying will not go beyond that.

These are such great shoes and I’m thrilled for my boys to have them to wear this spring and summer. I love the versatility of them. They can be worn with or without socks which is great, and I really feel like they can be dressed up or down.

The price tag on these shoes is very affordable and in the price range of most other children’s shoes. I do think that for the price, these Splay Athletics shoes are well worth it.

Splay is offering free shipping right now, so hurry up and grab a pair for your kiddos!

3 Tips For Talking To Your Kids About Racism

Racism is a tough topic. Fact. Many white parents avoid it altogether, which puts the onus on parents of color to take over and educate their kids, who are often victims of racism, about something their white friends don’t know much about.

Like any difficult or tense conversation, as diligent parents it’s difficult to get through to kids about racism without freaking them out, or making them overthink the issue. Children can fixate on negative things if they are too harshly exposed to them. There are big issues that exist in America, including current affairs around DACA renewal and hate crimes, which don’t need to be discussed with kids.

Nevertheless, racism is a crucial conversation to have in this day and age, even if you don’t explain everything that surrounds it.

Here are 3 tips for talking to your kids about racism. Let’s get started!

  • Use analogies to explain racism

No matter if you are white or a person of color, it is important to discuss racism with your kids. However, it can be difficult to explain racism to children, especially when the roots and ramifications of racism are often violent and inappropriate for younger kids to hear about.

One way of getting around the violence of the topic is by using analogies. Particularly for very young children, using animal analogies such as bunnies could help them understand the concept without being exposed to the full issue.

For example:

“Bunnies come in all colors, don’t they? You can have white bunnies, brown ones, black ones, orange ones and bunnies with multiple colors on them…” would be a starting point for a conversation about discrimination or categorization based on race.

It sounds childish, because that’s what it is! It can help kids to think about things abstractly, rather than relating it directly to their own identity, at first.

  • Get your kids into a diverse range of books, movies and games

One way to enter into the conversation of diversity and race is by exposing your kids to more than one “type” of literature and visual arts. For example, Disney princesses used to be primarily white (Ariel, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella… the list goes on). However, nowadays, Disney characters such as Moana are displaying a more diverse range of “heroes” for kids to look up to.

Introducing your kids to more than one type of action hero, princess, or other fictional characters, is more impactful than you might think. Empathy can be learned through admiration, and it’s important for kids to learn this early.

  • Don’t labor the point

Sometimes children take a long time to digest things, particularly if they are weighty or complicated. If you have talked about racism with your kids and they haven’t seemed to take it in, try not to labor the point. It may just be taking them a minute to process everything you talked about.

It’s best to drop in small conversations as they grow up, rather than one super-serious chat all at once.

Overall, racism is a difficult topic to tackle with children, but in a world that is still rife with inequality, it’s an essential conversation to have.

Understand what wicker baskets are used for

For a basket to be called wicker, it needs to be woven. Wicker baskets are produced by weaving cane, organic reed, roots, branches, and many other materials. These baskets can be small or large, have lids or open tops, sit on a table, or be hung on walls.

They also come in various shapes and kinds. Woven wicker baskets are usually made by hand through a process known as basket weaving. The good news is that wicker baskets are popular and utilized by many people globally. In this article, you will understand what wicker baskets are used for.

Why wicker baskets are desirable

Wicker baskets have been there for many years and they are expected to be around for many years to come. You may be wondering why wicker baskets are still desirable after all these years.

Well, this is because there is simplicity in production and the cost together with lots of materials and many skilled people to make something charming and useful. You see, many people are usually attracted to handcrafted items that are inexpensive, useful with a high level of appeal.

Wicker baskets are strong and lightweight. They are also more desirable than baskets made of metal or solid wood. In the past, it was easy to manufacture items because the materials and skills were readily available. Making wicker baskets was a well-sought-after skill. When the materials are used to make a basket, they can produce a basket that can store or carry heavy items.

Uses of wicker baskets

You can use baskets for everyday activities to store and carry things. You can also use them to display things, such as flowers, or even just use them as a decoration. You can also find some wicker baskets that are designed to work like a sieve. As you can see, the uses of wicker baskets depend on your intent, where you live, and who you are

A fisherman can use a wicker basket that has a latching lid as well as a sling to hold and store the fish they catch. A seafood restaurant can also use the same wicker basket to display an item as an aesthetic. Large baskets can be utilized for holding things in stores or even as a picnic basket.

You can also find some medium-sized wicker baskets that you can use for laundry. Keep in mind that you can use laundry hampers to store dirty laundry that needs to be washed.

Wicker waste baskets are also becoming increasingly popular, especially in bedrooms and bathrooms. So depending on the design, you can utilize wicker magazine baskets to hold magazines and newspapers close to your reading chair. The magazine holder basket can feature handles and a flat bottom one can be used for holding wine bottles.

As you can see, wicker baskets can be used for countless things. Above all, any specific basket can have more than a single-use. Therefore, make sure that you figure out the use of a wicker basket before purchasing it.

Part-Time Prepper: How To Be Ready For A Future Emergency

Pixabay – CC0 Licence

There are more than a few documentaries out there featuring the topic of prepping, a pursuit embarked upon by a significant number of people who want to be prepared – or “prepped” for extreme circumstances. Those circumstances, per the documentaries, can range from complete societal breakdown, to nuclear Armageddon, and to much more banal situations. And while the impression given by documentaries is that preppers are extreme in their concerns, the past year has shown that situations can change suddenly.

Anyone who lived through 2020 will agree that in future, we will take the idea of sudden and extreme change much less lightly, and so it is a realistic probability that to some extent, many of us are going to become preppers. The question is, unless you can commit as much time to it as the OG preppers, how can you prep for another pandemic or any other set of circumstances that changes life as we know it?

Stockpiling is the first step

Depending on where you were living last spring, measures to control the pandemic may have meant that you couldn’t go to the supermarket – or, if you could, that the shelves were often stripped bare of what you wanted to buy. Foreseeing another situation in which that happens, you might be well-advised to start a stockpile of the foods and other household items you couldn’t live without (or add to an existing stockpile, if the pandemic persuaded you to begin one). This also means buying extra storage – external larders with enough capacity to hold weeks’ worth of dried and canned food, as well as a freezer so you can store meat and perishable items.

Are you well-stocked for first aid?

When the pandemic hit, more than a few of us had some questions to ask about when and how to seek medical attention should we need it. Naturally, it wasn’t a great time to walk into a hospital seeking treatment, and family doctors’ offices came under no small amount of pressure too. While some cases of ill health and injury will always need professional medical intervention, and it shouldn’t be avoided in any circumstances, it is worth being ahead of the curve on home medical supplies when treatment is hard to come by. Dressings, wound cleaning supplies and OTC medications are all worth having, including cold and flu treatments. But to underline the deeper point, these do not take the place of doctor’s advice. In addition to a first aid kit, you should also undertake first aid training (understand why you should take first aid training) to handle emergencies.

Be ready for a loss of power

In 2020, the event which shook us all was the pandemic, but in the future we don’t know what might await us. Natural disasters and human-made events can lead to a disruption of the power grid – and it might not come back on when expected. Ideally, you will have a way to keep power flowing in your home should those circumstances arise. The best option to consider would be a solar generator kit, as it can be powered using the sun’s energy-something that hopefully will not be going away anytime soon. Having natural sources of energy is always helpful, natural disaster or not. And solar energy being one of the most sustainable, should ensure that you are equipped for almost any kind of situation. Another way of doing this is to have a generator which you can top up from local propane services, and can be used to supply power to the most important appliances. Propane gas is well suited to powering heating and cooking appliances in your home and therefore keeping your supplies topped up throughout the year is strongly recommended. Furthermore, buying propane gas in bulk is often cheaper than buying by the bottle and more convenient, so if you are considering stocking up, you can find more information on propane supplier websites such as nelsonpropane.com. That is not all though. Portable power banks, which can be charged by USB and used to power mobile devices, are also well worth investing in.

Feelgrounds

Feelgrounds is a barefoot shoe brand that is very passionate about getting people excited about barefoot shoes. In 2019 their crowdfunding campaign was fully funded within 48 hours, and now they are expanding their company and their models rapidly. They have lots of different shoes available, men and women, casual and not.

Many aspects of Feelgrounds footwear are made from recycled materials. They are always looking for new materials that fit in line with their environmental shoes.

Their shoes are independently tested and safety tested on a regular basis. The sustainability, fairness, and transparency of the company really sets them apart from others.

These Droptop slip-on shoes are super cute and will stay in style for years to come. They are casual enough to be worn as a sneaker, similar to a skater shoe, but can also be dressed up if they needed to be.

They are super light.

I feel like when I’m wearing them I can’t even tell I have shoes on because of the lightweight-ness of them.

It’s kinda like I’m walking directly on the ground with just a thin surface between my foot and the ground.

Not only are these Droptop’s lightweight, but they are so, so flexible. They truly move with the foot and allow the foot to move freely and without restriction.

All materials used to create the Feelgrounds shoes are vegan and many of the are made from recycled materials. Specifically, the mesh used on these Droptop’s is made from recycled PET – bottles and containers.

Pretty cool!

Not only is the mesh very breathable, but it also offers an easy slip-on and go convenience, which is perfect for moms!

One of the best aspects of these shoes is that they can be washed in the washing machine. I love that I don’t have to worry too much about keeping them clean because of that feature. I’m a mom, so if my kids go in the mud, I’m right there with them. Washable shoes are a lifesaver, and hard to come by.

As someone with low volume feet (height of foot from bottom of foot to top of foot), these shoes are just a bit loose on my feet. I do plan on adding a felt strip on the underside of the top of the shoe to help aid in the lose feet.

The ankle opening is somewhat wide compared to many other slip-on shoes, so if you like tight fitting shoes around the ankle, keep that in mind.

On the heel of the inside of the shoe there is reinforced felt. This is super helpful in keeping your foot from slipping too much while walking. A really nice feature that I don’t see very often.

As with the other barefoot shoes that I have been reviewing, these Droptop’s have a very large toe box. This is especially great for someone with wide feet. I am excited about this wide-ness because I am training my feet to splay correctly so that my feet can function as they are intended. A wide toed shoe allows for our feet to spread out as much as it wants and needs – that’s what our feet were made to do!

These shoes are just so great and I’m so glad to have found Feelgrounds. They have tons of shoe options available on their website, and lots of color options available for this specific Droptop style.

I highly recommend looking into Feelgrounds and the shoes they provide. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

Feelgrounds is having a 30% off sale right now, so go to their website and check them out!! Now is the perfect time for a shoe upgrade!

5 Natural Painkiller Options To Support Your Health

pexels

When most of us experience pain our first reaction is to take over-the-counter or prescription painkillers. This is perfectly understandable because you’ll want the pain to subside as fast as possible! Some people are open to trying natural alternatives to painkillers, and if you are one of them, these six solutions may be of interest to you. For those with chronic pain, there are many alternative medicine options out there that you might want to check out. Natural solutions may not always be suitable, and so it’s best to speak to your doctor first and then decide what medication would be suitable for you.

  1. Capsaicin

Capsaicin is an ingredient in chili peppers, you can buy a capsaicin-based cream which is an effective form of pain relief. The ingredient helps to reduce pain, particularly muscle or neuropathic pain. You can purchase the cream from health stores online, or get more information from your doctor.

  1. CBD

CBD, or cannabidiol, is derived from the cannabis plant. CBD does not have any intoxicating effects, and it can provide many health benefits. Studies have indicated that CBD is effective for reducing anxiety and depression symptoms. It’s also useful for pain relief, especially at concentrations of 1000mg or higher. Havard Health discusses a study by the European Journal Of Pain, suggesting that, ‘using an animal model, CBD applied on the skin could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis.’ CBD oil products have also shown great potential for treating neuropathic pain. Since CBD oil is natural, it may not have as many side effects as traditional pharmaceutical drugs. People who want to try something organic and yet effective can use CBD oils for topical application in conjunction with other CBD edible products that may help to relieve pain from within. You can do a quick Google search for ‘best CBD oil UK‘ or any other location you dwell in to find a bevy of CBD suppliers in your area.

3 . Turmeric

Turmeric is a popular spice that’s used in cooking, particularly for making Indian food dishes. Turmeric contains curcumin, which can protect the body from free radicals. The spice has a strong anti-inflammatory effect, so it’s a great painkiller. Turmeric is considered an effective remedy for joint pain and headaches. Turmeric can be purchased as a spice, in the form of capsules, or you can even buy Turmeric tea.

  1. Acupuncture

Acupuncture uses fine needles to target pressure points on the skin, it’s a type of Chinese medicine that’s been used for centuries. According to Health Line, it’s a ‘minimally invasive method to stimulate nerve-rich areas of the skin surface to influence tissues, glands, organs, and various functions of the body’. The body responds to acupuncture by pain modulation, triggering an immune system response, and encouraging circulation. As well as pain relief, acupuncture is believed to be beneficial for conditions such as migraines and anxiety.

  1. Meditation

Meditation is a practice that can help us to de-stress, calm our minds, and pay attention to the present moment. Meditation can be used to heal difficult emotions, reconnect with the body and mind, and practice mindfulness.

According to Everyday Health, ‘Researchers who assigned 109 patients with chronic pain to either a mindfulness meditation program or a waitlist found that those who did the meditation reported more pain relief, than those who did not.’ To get started with meditation try apps like Headspace or The Mindfulness app. Some people may prefer to use medicinal, plant-based aids to help bring their mind to a meditative state. Such plants, such as cannabis for example, can be obtained (albeit in places where its use is legalized) through dispensaries like as hibrid, that often have a variety of strains for you to try and see which works best.

Some strains can especially help calm the anxious, never-ending monologue in the head, and thus could make for better meditation practice. Some compounds in cannabis, as mentioned above (CBD), are said to be beneficial for pain relief as well! You may want to look into how you can use a dry herb vaporizer if that is a method you would like to try to get the best effects, or you can experiment with a variety of other ways and compare your experiences so you are getting what you need through this form of painkilling.

Some chronic pain conditions can be difficult to manage. You might have tried several conventional pain killers, and have experienced little relief. In these situations, regenerative pain management may be a suitable step moving forward.

Be Lenka

Established in 2017, Be Lenka develops and produces barefoot shoes, baby carriers, and baby, toddler, baby wearing, nursing, and maternity clothes. The company designs and makes their product in Europe where they are under the European Union laws – many related to health, safety, and quality.

Co-founded by Lenka Cenigova, an Ex-Paralympian, Be Lenka’s brand was inspired by her love for babywearing. The co-founder, Juraj Fehervari, has had a huge roll in bringing rapid awareness of the Be Lenka products.

Benefits of the Be Lenka shoes are almost endless. Foot health is so important and their shoes are so beneficial for each foot that wears them.

Be Lenka’s entire barefoot line of shoes offer unrestricted movement of the toes – how our toes are naturally designed.

The best feature about these shoes is the wide toe box. This is the front part of the shoe where the toes sit. The toe box of the shoe is so, so important because of the way our toes are designed. Our feet are not intended to be squished into tiny, narrow shoes – like what most people wear. A wide toe box ensures that toes have enough space to be spread out and function how they were made to. This space allows toes to move freely, which guarantees all day comfort.

Because Be Lenka is a European shoe brand, their sizing is also European. Their size chart is very helpful when deciding on the perfect fit. The website gives directions on how to measure feet correctly to ensure a good fit. They also have a size guide that is printable, so you can just place the foot on the printed guide and find your shoe size that way. Below I have linked the size guides for easy access.

Kids Play Shoes

Click here for the printable sizing guide.

Kiddos can run, jump, skip, and play in these barefoot shoes. They are stylish but most importantly, comfortable. Lots of colors are available to choose from, including a few designs. The shoes featured and pictured here are the Army option.

I love the functionality of these barefoot play shoes. The soles are zero drop, which means there is no height difference from the toe to the heel. The soles of these shoes have a straight and single plane. This is such an important design feature, especially in kids shoes. The zero drop design is so good for growing and changing feet.

Along with the zero drop of these shoes, they also have a 6mm sole. This is very thin and flexible when comparing to most other children’s shoes. The shoe is able to naturally bend and flex with the foot which brings so many benefits. A flexible shoe helps improve ‘walking posture, stronger foot muscles, and increased sensory feedback (for better control of motor function and balance).”

The shoes have a Velcro fastener so that they can be tightened or loosened as needed. The fastener closes and tightens around the ankle so these shoes are perfect for many different foot types.

Women’s Sierra Boots

Click here for the printable sizing guide.

These boots are beautiful. The Sierra Boot is a tall riding style boot that can be worn with almost any outfit. The boot is available in black, brown, and [cherry] red, with sizing options for shoe size 36-43. See below for more sizing information.

This boot is made with premium quality leather that covers the outside of the boot. This leather is super durable and moves easily with the foot. On the inside of the boot there is a super soft fleece lining that provides insulation and warm, dry comfort.

When wearing these boots my feet feel warm, which is huge for me because my feet are always cold.

A super thin and flexible sole allows the boot to move very easily with the foot. This also attributes to how light-weight the shoe is. There is zero heel elevation of this shoe, which is just what our feet want.

These shoes are just darling and seriously perfect for any occasion. The premium leather and soft fleece give comfort and warmth during the cold months. Toes can freely, and easily, move just how they were intended.

I am looking forward to wearing them for many more fall and winters to come!

How To Prepare Yourself For A Big Move

Tierra Mallorca on Unsplash

Once you have decided to move – be that to a new property in your current town or even abroad – you may be tempted to pack your bags and just go. However, it’s never that easy – and there are certain steps you need to take ahead of time to ensure that you are ready for the big move. For one, you need to hire a removal firm like this austin moving company if you want any chance of getting all of your furniture to your new home in one trip. Trying to take things by car will take days, which is only going to cause unnecessary stress.

With that in mind, here are some tips you can use to help prepare yourself and your family to move into your dream home. This is a great way to make the transition as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Think carefully about the area in which you want to move.

It is important that you are as specific as possible. For example, if you were planning to immigrate to a new country – you need to do your research so that you have an idea of which specific town or region you would like to live in. For example, you may wish to live somewhere with a sea view. In which case, you might want to look at these san clemente ocean view homes to see if any of them take your fancy. Knowing details like this can help narrow down your search. Otherwise, your search pool will be simply too wide, making it harder to find a place that’s right for you. When choosing a location, you might want to consider the following:

  • Local amenities (Leisure activities, restaurants, cafes, libraries etc.)
  • Professional Opportunities (Can you find work within your chosen industry, what employment prospects are abundant in this area)
  • Proximity to local schools or similar facilities.
  • Proximity to public transport.
  • How long it will take you to get to/from work.

If you don’t know the area you’re moving to, it’s best to reach out to a local realtor, like these Summerlin Realtors, for example. Realtors know their local area better than anyone else, understanding the pros and cons of each neighbourhood as if they live in it themselves. Of course, you’re probably only going to see one side of the picture, but it’s a good place to start before you do any of your own research.

Put together a budget.

With COVID-19 leaving many of us in a state of financial uncertainty, you may feel that now is not the best time to move. However, many properties are currently on offer for a much lower price than they would be otherwise – giving you the chance to find a nicer property for a price that aligns with your budget. Furthermore, there are plenty of things you can do to reduce any financial pressure you may be dealing with. For example, you should find out how to maximize your family budget.,

Be honest about the amount of money that you can save and spend in the run-up to the move – ensuring that you remain comfortably within your budget. This reduces the chances of you overspending and ending up in a difficult situation.

Make the most of the support that is available to you.

Many people cannot afford to purchase a property out of pocket. As a result, you may need to secure some kind of home loan to make the process a little easier on your behalf. However, as with any loan, it is important that you do not rush the process and research thoroughly what you are getting yourself in for. You need to work with a provider who has your best interest at heart, meaning you can put together a repayment plan that works for you. For example, you could work with a company such as Property Guru to find a home loan singapore.

Find ways to reduce the costs.

Whenever or wherever you move, you’re going to have to be willing to spend a bit of money. For example, on top of the cost of your new property, you also have to cover additional expenses such as home renovations, cleaning, and even removal van hire fees. Therefore, you must find various ways to cut down the costs, saving yourself valuable money. For example, there are various things you can do to save money while renovating your home, such as purchasing items when they or on sale or trying your hand at DIY.

Don’t rush the process.

On some occasions, such as when you have been offered a job within a new city, you may have to make certain decisions pretty quickly. However, if this is not the case, it is important that you give yourself enough time to make decisions and do not put any unnecessary pressure on yourself in the process. This means that you can hold out on signing a contract until you find a place that is right for you – instead of rushing to find a place and ending up in a home you don’t really like.

Start packing early.

Whether we’re moving house or packing for our next holiday, we are all guilty of leaving packing until the last minute. However, this doesn’t lessen your workload at all – it simply adds to your stress. Therefore, you should start packing as early as possible. Remember to group items together based on their use or the room in which they belong – that way, you’ll find unpacking much easier. Getting started early reduces the chances of you accidentally leaving something behind or an item getting broken. Ensure that you have all of the materials you’ll need at hand, such as boxes, tape, and bubble wrap. You should also ensure that you clearly label all boxes so that you can tell them apart. Also, getting in touch with a reliable mover service beforehand can help a lot. You can get in touch with California trucking companies or the ones in your locality that can help you in moving out from your old home to the new one.

Put together a list of everything you need to do.

As the big day gets closer, you may have noticed that your mental to-do-list continues to grow and grow. If you don’t make a note of everything that needs to be done, you’re making it easy for yourself to forget to do something. In order to further simplify the process – you should also write down when you need to get a certain task completed by. For example, you should try and finish packing most of your belongings a few days before moving.

Get any renovations done ahead of time.

If you have a bit of time from when the contracts have been signed and your move-in date, why not find a way to get started on renovations early? This means that your property will be ready for you when you move in – and you don’t have to make space for decorators or contractors to work amongst piles and piles of boxes. If this is impossible, make sure you have a plan in place for exactly how you want your home to look – as this will make it easier to organize and put together when the time comes.
