Keeping warm in winter is one of the fundamental needs you will always have, and something that you always want your home to provide as well as possible. But sometimes it’s just not the case that your home is doing this effectively, and when that is the case you need to make sure that you are looking at the heating system and whether it is working as it should. In this post, we are going to take a look at some of the common problems that might arise with your heating system, along with an explanation of what you can do about those issues.
No Heating At All
If your system is not giving out any heat whatsoever, then there are a few things that might be wrong with the heating system on the whole. It might be that you need to check your thermostat – this is a wise first move, in any case – and turn it up if necessary. Or you might need to check the timer to see whether the heating is meant to come on now. And if the pilot light on the boiler is out, the boiler could need relighting. If it’s still not working after all that, you might need to get in touch with a professional.
Cold Radiators
If some of your heating is working but you also have some radiators that are staying cold, then there might be an issue with only part of the system. Generally the most common culprit of this is that you have an air lock in the system somewhere. The solution is to bleed your radiators, which is a very simple thing once you know how to do it. You just need to get your radiator key and open up the valve a little as the air hisses out. But be sure to put some towels down, in case water sprays on the floor.
Leaking Pipes
Sometimes you are going to have leaking pipes in the system, and when that happens it’s a sign that it’s really time to get some help. This is not the kind of thing that you can probably fix yourself, so you should call in a plumber or look to using the services of a heating maintenance service company, who will be able to know exactly what is needed here. In either case, you should then be able to get your heating system up and running again soon enough, and you’ll be back to warmth in no time.
Water Gurgling
If you can always hear water gurgling through the system, that might be a sign that there is some air blockage in the pipes, and that is something that you are going to want to fix as soon as possible. This is probably going to be stopping the system from working as well as it could, so it’s a really good idea to make sure that you look into this. You might be surprised at what a difference it makes once you sort this issue out.
