Staying Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water daily is not only a great way to prevent a cold, but also fight it off if you get one. On a daily basis try to drink the recommended amount of eight small glasses of water a day. If you struggle to do this, there are many apps out there that you can use to track how much you are drinking. Some will give you a live message on your phone to remind you to have a drink of water if you hadn’t already.

Sleep

Unfortunately the best way to get rid of any illness is to rest, and this includes getting plenty of sleep. When asleep your body repairs itself and heals, allowing you to feel better when you wake up. Sleeping is one of the best ways to fight off a cold, and to feel better. Try and aim to get the recommended 7 to 9 hours sleep daily as this will also help prevent you getting any future illnesses. If you struggle here are five ways to get a comfortable sleep.

Rinse Your Mouth With Salt Water

If you have a sore throat or need to clear any mucus from your body, rinsing your mouth with salt water can help. Saltwater can help with infections helping to prevent them, lessen the pain they bring and have you back to your normal self in no time. It’s important to note that you do not swallow the saltwater as this can make you sick. You also don’t want the water to be too hot that it burns off any of the healing properties.

Eat A Healthy Diet

One of the best ways to fight against a cold is to eat a healthy diet. Base the majority of your diet around whole foods like spinach, kombucha and brown bread. Try to make sure you are regularly consuming your five a day of fruit and vegetables. Try to eat plenty of fish and reduce the number of saturated fats and sugars. If you don’t like the taste of vegetables, try to include them within your sauces, so that you don’t realise they are there – such as adding peas to a lasagne or blending peppers and carrots into a tomato pizza base.

Overall, the best cure to a cold is to rest. Don’t push yourself too hard and allow a couple of days for you to get better. Make sure you are eating healthy and keeping hydrated.
