As a parent, I would do anything to make sure that not only is my child safe but that I take the steps to make sure my husband and I are safe as well. So while I do things on the daily to keep us safe, some are easier than others. When we moved into our new house I noticed that smoke alarms were installed. I was glad about this, as I had made it really clear to my husband that I would not be moving into a home that didn’t have any smoke detectors. I knew someone who did that once, and they were lucky that they weren’t at home when their house caught on fire, as because there wasn’t a smoke alarm, no one found out about it until it was too late. That is why I like to make sure that our house, and future homes have access to these critical devices. I also ensure that I take the time to get in touch with a professional company like Aardvark Electric (Click here to contact them) to get them to come and test it when it’s required, as this way I will know for sure if it is working or if it needs replacing. When I do this, I feel like I am in full control over the safety of myself and my loved ones.

One thing that I wasn’t best pleased about was the fact that we had a smoke detector but not a carbon monoxide detector in the house. My smoke detectors do not detect carbon monoxide, so getting a carbon monoxide detector was high on my to-do list. Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that is nearly impossible to identify without a proper detector. Carbon monoxide is the single largest cause of accidental poisoning. The CDC reports that over 15,000 people each year are treated in emergency rooms for non-fire-related carbon Monoxide exposures.

Initially, my plan was to rent a gas detector from a Gas Monitor Rental service. However, I soon realized I would rather buy one because I will need it for a long time. When I purchased it, I was unsure where to install it, even though the instruction manual had specific instructions on where to place it. I was so confused that I ended up calling my local Fire Department to ask. Most important is to place a detector near bedrooms (if you only have one in the house make sure it’s near where you sleep). It’s a good idea to have a detector on every floor of your house as well as one close to the garage door if you have an attached garage. At the same time, you may want to make sure that your garage doors are working as they should just in case you need to open them for an emergency situation. For example, if you live in Annapolis, MD you should contact ADP for all your garage door needs, or somewhere similar depending on your problem. When you do this, you can get two jobs done in one, so your safety and security are only going to be increased as a result. My fire marshal suggested to try and place your detector between knee and chest level, making sure not to cover your detector with furniture or curtains.

This Mamas Experience

The First Alert 10-Year Alarm Life Carbon Monoxide Detector contains a sealed non- replaceable battery making it so easy to use. The user manual goes into great detail explaining where to install, how to install and even has a wall mounting guide template (I feel this was made for me since the thought of unnecessary holes in my wall keeps me up at night). The First Alert Carbon Monoxide detector can not only be mounted on the wall it can be placed on a tabletop. Getting your alarm ready to use is easy, once you switch your alarm on it cannot be turned off. Once your alarm has reached its end of life (10 years) you will have to break the tab and slide the switch to deactivate mode. Once it has been deactivated it cannot be reactivated. Your alarm will chirp to let you know that you have activated it correctly.carbon monoxide back

Make sure you test your alarm weekly and make sure everyone in your house knows your “emergency plan”. As a child, I remember my father teaching my brother and I about our “safe plan”. In case our fire alarm or carbon monoxide alarm would sound we knew to immediately get outside and to our safe meeting place. Make sure your “safe place” is far enough away from your house in case of fire and to keep a safe distance from emergency vehicles. Make sure everyone in your household knows where your safe place is, in the event that your family gets separated while evacuating; it will also help in knowing that everyone has safely made it out. When testing your alarm have your children help so they are familiar with the sound and be sure they know to never ignore your carbon monoxide alarm when it sounds.

Keeping your family safe is important and First Alert 10- Year Alarm Life Carbon Monoxide Detector makes it easy. Although you should not fully rely on it to always be working efficiently, just like a light bulb it can run out of power or decrease in efficiency, so to combat this making sure that you have a house inspector to check over this amongst other elements in your house would be a great idea to keep your home safe. You can get a Home inspection Austin, TX, Orlando, FL, and pretty much anywhere so make sure that you are taking advantage of this safety feature for your home.

  1. Having 5 kids, I agree with you the importance of having this. I do have one but really need one upstairs as well as the one I have downstairs. I am glad you asked about placement, I didn’t realize to place between knee and chest level. Thanks for the opportunity to win

  2. this is something every home needs,,its the silent killer ,it will kill you before you realize what is wrong

  3. I did not realize there was a proper height level for placement. Our new house is hardwired for fire and sprinklers but not carbon monoxide. When we moved to our new house last year, we purchased one for each of the kids’ rooms. Didn’t think to put one near the garage.

  4. Having kids makes this a very important thing to have. I learned that most important is to place a detector near bedrooms (if you only have one in the house make sure it’s near where you sleep).

  5. I had a CO2 monitor go off one time when I was home. It turned out to be a short lived monitor because we had only had for a couple of years. This is 10 yrs life span. It lends peace of mind for myself and family.

  6. This should be in every home. Just a normal smoke detector is not enough. This can save your life. You can not put a price on lives of your family.

  7. Looove this!! So important!! I love that you don’t have to wall mount it, I hate unnecessary holes too!!

  8. Every home needs a smoke alarm & a carbon monoxide detector!! They do save lives!! I think buying them is worth the money!! The lives they save could be your own or your loved ones!! First Alert are awesome products!!

  9. I like that you can just keep it on a tabletop and the battery lasts for 10 years. I’m not the best at remembering to switch out batteries.

  10. I’ve been thinking about getting one of these. We have fire alarms/monitors…why not this?

  11. I have been meaning to get one of these alerts but just kept putting it off, this is a silent killer that most people don’t think about, thank you for great review

  12. i love that the battery lasts so long! And i love that it can be mounted or left on the table. We had a carbon monoxide alarm when i was growing up and thank God, because one day it went off and we had to leave our house for 3 days to get rid of it all.

  13. Absolutely a necessity. I hear so often, especially in fall and winter, about families having close calls or losing someone from carbon monoxide./

  14. My furnace is 60 something years old. My grandchildren stay at my house a lot. Last year the gas company came and inspected the gas lines coming into each home. They told me I need to keep an eye on carbon monoxide in my home because of the age of my furnace and because of the duct work coming from the chimney. I got a carbon monoxide detector but if doesn’t do all this one does. I would love to have this so I don’t worry about when the grandchildren come over and myself as far as that goes. I also love that this one has a sealed unit and doesn’t require you replace the battery like the one I have.

  15. Really need one of these. Apparently we were getting gassed and didn’t know it the other day…

  16. I have never heard you should place your detector between knee and chest level. I guess I just assumed it should go on the ceiling or high on the wall. I really do learn something new every day.

  17. Thanks for the tips. I never really knew where to place my detector and now I know. I don’t have one right now because mine broke and I have been shopping around for one. This detector sounds amazing and I love that it will last ten years. I also really love that you can mount it on the wall or place it on a hard surface….

  18. I like the carbon monoxide alert detector can be placed on a countertop or on the wall. The ten year warranty is encouraging also.

  19. I agree, it is so important to stay safe. You just never know. My dad made us get CO2 monitors the minute we moved in to our house. I never knew about the deactivation tab, and that they could not be reactivated.

  20. Very cool product, would definitely give you a sense of security in your home.

  21. I like that this is a safety device that uncovers something you wouldn’t know without it and is a lifesaver. A must for every home.

  22. I have friends who almost lost their lives from CO poisoning. Thank goodness they had a working First Alert alarm. These also make great house warming or baby gifts.

  23. I didn’t realize you needed one on every level of the home, though it makes sense.

  24. I love that you can place this on a table rather than mounting it on the wall.
And I had no idea that it didn’t go up high like a smoke detector.

  25. I love that it comes with a sealed battery and it lasts for so long! We have one now and we mount it low on the side of the kitchen cabinet, but our youngest kiddo keeps messing with it. UGH! It is over 10 years old, so we need to replace it soon. This would be so awesome to have.

  26. I Love the idea of this alarm! Not only don’t you have to change the batteries but it can be set on a dresser or table end!

  27. this sounds like such a great product, I don’t have one of these in my home but I need one badly.

  28. I just recently moved somewhere that has gas and its the first place ive ever lived that does so it makes me a little nervous so i would love to have that little extra bit of security in place for my family

  29. It’s good to know you can call the Fire Dept. for advice about where to place the detector.

  30. I don’t have a CO detector yet, but have had one on my mind for a while. Now, with a baby on the way, I don’t think I can delay any longer. It surprised me how simple this device is and how little is required to operate it. That’s reassuring.

  31. I really like that you dont have change the batteries. Sounds like a great product.

  32. I love the long battery life. Every home should have a few of them installed
